What is Landscape Photography?

Landscape photography is capturing an image that embodies the spirit of the outdoors.

It carries a sense of being there, a moment in time, to witness something beautiful, peaceful, or even dramatic, like an approaching storm front.

I want you to feel the emotions I feel when I am standing in the middle of nature capturing something amazing.

Many years ago, when I was a child of about 9, I was visiting the Warrumbungle Mountains with my family.

I borrowed my father’s old camera & climbed a hill nearby to watch the sun rise.

I took a photo as the soft glow of the sun spread across the valley floor.

I still have that photo and I remember how peaceful it was.

Since then, I have looked for opportunities to capture the environment around me in a way that would do it justice. To freeze a moment in time, that some of us, so busy in our lives, may not stop to notice and appreciate.

Landscape photography is looking out of the window to see a storm front approaching.

Trying to race to a vantage spot to capture the scene and then get back home without getting myself & my camera gear drenched, or my car hail damaged.

Watching the wispy clouds in the sky all day, hoping for a stunning sunset, only for the cloud to disappear, leaving no colour at all.

It’s hiking out to the end of a long break wall, loaded up with camera gear, in winter, waves pounding, the wind howling so strong and cold that you can’t feel your fingers. Then, you leave never having taken an image.

Frustrated as these things may be, it’s part of the journey, of capturing mother nature at her unpredictable best.

When you finally get that photograph, it really means something & inspires me to do even better.

Why Landscape Photography?

There are many reasons why people take landscape photos.

For me, I have a passion for nature.

Landscape photography is a great way to be outdoors.

At the same time, landscape photography is about having experiences.

It’s about being in engulfed by nature and soaking up everything around you.

Landscape photography provides a unique outlook on the world.
